Ku Chin-shui
Ku Chin-shui () is a Taiwanese aboriginal athlete. During the 1970 Asian Games he won a gold medal.〔Yang, Yi-chung and Hsu Ming-li. Translated by Jake Chung (Staff Writer). "(Man cleared of 1999 Uni Air accident )." ''Taipei Times''. Saturday May 14, 2011. Page 2. Retrieved on March 1, 2014.〕
After an Uni Air flight suffered an on-board explosion after landing on August 24, 1999, 28 people were injured and Ku Jing-chi (C: 古金池, P: ''Gǔ Jīnchí''), the older brother of Ku Chin-shui, died. A report from the Aviation Safety Council (ASC) stated that it believed that a motorbike battery jostled, igniting gasoline in bottles in an overhead compartment. Prosecutors accused Ku Chin-shui of asking his nephew to bring gasoline on the flight.〔
Initially Ku Chin-shui was convicted and sentenced to a 10-year sentence. It was appealed and shortened to 7 1/2 years. After a fifth retrial, Ku Chin-shui was declared not guilty. The ASC had commissioned an analysis from the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, and this analysis stated that the ASC's simulation environment differed from that of the aircraft which had exploded. The ''Taipei Times'' stated "After a 12-year battle to clear his name, Ku Chin-shui’s legal woes appear over."〔
